Essay:
Mother Hale's Children honors the life of Clara McBride Hale, known affectionately as Mother Hale, an activist for children's rights and founder of Hale House. During the first fifty years of her life, Mother Hale was a foster mother to over forty children. With encouragement from her daughter, she took in drug-addicted mother and her infant and cared for them. This was the beginning of decades of caring for babies born exposed to drugs or alcohol to be nurtured by Mother Hale. This marked the birth of Hale House.
During the 1970s, the scope of work initiated by Mother Hale increased to include many programs for at-risk children and their families. In the 1980s, as teh urban drug problem gave way to the AIDS crisis, Mother Hale responded by taking in children who had lost parents to the disease or who were themselves born infected with HIV, the virus that causes AIDS. Mother Hale believed, unconditionally, that all children, from all walks of life and circumstances, need and deserve love. With this love they would not only survive but would overcome the hardships into which they were born.
