Artist statement from the exhibit, Journey of Hope: Quilts Inspired by President Barack Obama
Kogelo, Kenya, November 4, 2008
I will never stop thinking about the powerful images of the people in Kogelo, Kenya, as they celebrated the election of President Barack Obama. The unbridled spirit and compassion of the people wer infectious. I found myself dancing, laughing, and crying with them, but most of all wishing I could be there. It was Africa, the cradle of civilization, "the Motherland"! It was the home of our president's father! I wanted to exhale and embrace the moment forever.
I am blessed beyond measure to create a quilt that prayerfully captures the essence of that extraoridinary day. The works was produced to pay respect to Barack Obama Sr., and the people of Kogelo, Kenya.
