Features or notes about the quilt's appearance, materials, or construction:
The following information was supplied by the quiltmaker: How did you choose the materials used in your quilt? "I searched for months to find fabrics which would help to suggest the colors and textures of the scenes represented. Certain fabrics, such as for the rhinos and giraffes, were good backgrounds for painting the actual animals' characteristics onto the fabric. Upholstery fabrics are also wonderful for the colors and textures. I find good fabric pieces in clothing at thrift stores as well." How long have you been making quilts? How did you learn to quilt? "I made my first quilt in 1977. I taught myself the basics from books and have been developing my own techniques in the last 8 years." What was your primary reason for entering the Lands' End contest? Do you frequently enter your quilts in competition? "I try to enter two quilts per year into National/International competitions. It gives me great satisfaction and confidence to be juried into these major exhibits." Has being a winner in the Land's End contest made a difference in your life? Has it changed the way you look at your work as a quilt maker? "It was the first time my work has won any prize recognition and to see my work published in the Lands' End address book is a thrill. It reinforces for me and for all quilters that our work has value beyond the established notion of quilts as bed coverings. Other people give more recognition and value to my work as well."
