Mary Ann Poindexter was married to Dr. John Marshall Staples, on September 30, 1852. The quilt was made by her mother and sisters at the time of her marriage. Dr. Staples died during the Civil War and Mary Ann presented the quilt to her sister Elizabeth ("Bettie") Poindexter on the occasion of her marriage in 1872 to Parks Gunn.
