Description:

This is the last completed quilt Mary Gasperik made. She made it for her great-grand daughter Cathy Salser who was born in November 1966. Susan Salser, the child's mother, remembers that Mary Gasperik did not quilt much after 1962 when her husband died. And in 1967 she was dealing with painful arthritis. But she made this quilt for her newest great grandchild. The pattern (or possibly stamped block) dates back to the 1940s.

Although the backing and binding are done in plainweave cotton, the blue ground of the quilt top is appears to be rayon crepe and the four girls' bonnets are cut from pink and white cotton flannel and stitched down with thick pink embroidery floss

Around each face is a wreath; beneath each face is a quilted stem with two leaves. 24 quilted four-petaled flowers are throughout the center panel, each inside a quilted square and each bearing a gold embroidered center.

Each young girl is wearing a flannel bonnet which is tied in a bow under her chin. The faces are embroidered with bright blue eyes. Medium brown floss is used to embroider the hair and other facial features.

A similar design of baby faces on flower stalks sold on ebay. Found along the side of one of the blocks on that quilt was this pattern information: No. 0997 Flower Blocks RN21179. "RN" refers to Royal Neighbors publishing company (Davenport, IA). Through their mail order catalog, needlework patterns were sold. Further research is needed.

Susan Salser remembers: "My daughter Cathy was born November of 1966. Mary Gasperik died May 25, 1969. We were living in Switzerland at the time when I sent a thank you note to my grandmother. Grand-daughter Susan Salser began this research effort in 1991, after she and her two sisters divided up the quilts which belonged to their mother (Elsie Gasperik Krueger) who died in 1988. Her ongoing research has been fruitful and interesting.
