Contruction: Piecing, Applique, Machine Embroidery, Attachments (beading, charms, buttons, etc.), The quilt depicts a stylized African-American woman in black cotton, holding her arms wide, displaying a cape effect of many zigzag bands of African cottons, edged in black. Some of the bands are machine embroidered in metallic scroll patterns; some are beaded with metallic beads in various sizes. Most of the zigzag bands are edged with a thick metallic thread applied on the bobbin. The central black figure is embroidered at the top end with a portion of a sun with rays, which also suggests the figure's face. At the lower edge of the central figure, three bands of machine embroidered circular pebbles in different colors are separated by three bands of white applique. This pattern forms not only the land and the water, but also the decorated hem of the central figure's dress. The figure is appliqued in the central body with three more stylized women in bright African dresses, all bent forward at the waist with round heads.
