Erie was the oldest of eleven children born to Walter Noel Leake and Elizabeth Jane Rogers. By early 1893 she had met Samuel Columbus Barrington, a young man who lived with his parents on a farm near Jonah, Texas.  They were married October 3, 1893 at Shiloh Baptist Church in Beaukiss, Texas.  Sometime between 1896 and 1900 they moved near Healdton, Oklahoma and farmed for about 5 years before moving back to Texas and settled in Williamson County.  Although she was making quilts earlier in her life, we know she was making them on a regular basis by 1921 according to correspondence at the time.  Also, in a small ledger that Samuel kept he inventoried the contents of their home sometime between 1922 and 1927 in which he mentions a sewing machine located in the living room, which apparently had been converted into a bedroom/sewing area, and 25 quilts!  She made clothing for the family (five children) and was accomplished at crochet and embroidery.  Samuel died in 1929 and Erie sold their house in Georgetown, Texas and moved to Austin, Texas that same year.  She died in her sleep on April 30, 1960 at the age of 82.
