Essay:
This mint-condition, cut-out chintz applique quilt is an excellent example of how early 19th century quiltmakers could make expensive chintz fabrics go further to good effect. After 1858, textile manufacturers began producing less-expensive fabrics for the express purpose of using them on quilts in this manner.
