Artist statement about the work- Emancipation to Equality: A Long Journey Continues created for African American response to 150 Anniversary of Emancipation Proclamation in Ashville, KY. Quilt Description- Dukes lays out the front of the quilt like an American flag. In the blue is stenciled "Yes we can. Obama 08" three times. The black national anthem is written in the white stripes. Names of African Americans like "Ruby Bridges, Ella Fitzgerald, Fannie Lou Hamer, and Colin Powell are listed inside the stars.
