Description of quilt:
Civil war era Whigs Defeat quilt which was given to the Museum by Gay B. McNemer with the history of having been done on a Georgia plantation.
Essay:
Teh Whig's Defeat was probably made as a best quilt in about 1840 of red green and white materials by Charlotte LeSure Gaulden on the Okapilco Plantation in Brooks County Georgia. The quilt is large 100 by 100 and made of 16 blocks with a decorative quilting pattern.

A gift to the Museum by Gay B. McNemer, with the associated history. The quilt maker was the great great grandmother of Gay McNemer on her mothers side
Describe anything about the history of the quilt that wasn't already recorded in a previous field:
Charles Screven Gaulden moved to Brooks County in 1859 and established a large plantation there. His daughter was Charlotte Gaulden who made the quilt for her large four poster bed. Her brother, Thomas, joined the Confederate army not long after the quilt was completed and became wounded during a battle in Virginia, then died.
