Essay:

Keepsake Quilting in Centre Harbor, New Hampshire announced a Family Keepsake Challenge for their 1993 Create a Family Keepsake Quilt Exhibition. Contestants had to buy a fat quarter pack with six prints, with a minimum of four prints being used in a 30 inch by 30 inch quilt. Two other fabrics could be used for the quilt. The entry form and quilt had to be shipped to Keepsake to meet the May 3rd deadline. Scarlett noted that she shipped her two entries on April 14th by UPS. The judges were Ruth Neidhardt and Denny Stringfellow. Challenge quilts could be listed for sale. Scarlett's two entries, 114 & 115, were listed for $500 each but neither sold. Quilts were kept until Oct 4th, then shipped back, except the first and second place winners which become part of the permanent Keepsake Quilting Challenge Collection. Scarlett included a self addressed and stamped postcard, which was mailed to notify her that her entries had arrived safely. Keepsake Quilting is now in North Carolina and they still offer Challenges. Their site is https://www.keepsakequilting.com/

This quilt was an experiment in putting three blocks of different sizes together.  They overlap and share common pattern pieces.  This makes an illusion of blocks laying on top of each other.  The silk flowers and stems are hand stitched to the fabric, giving the quilt a three dimensional quality.  Scarlett made the bias tape used for the hand appliqued vines and she hand appliqued the leaves.

The small block is Mosaic #3, the middle block is Ornate Star and the large block is a modified Rolling Stone with a larger center square and side strips.

This wallhanging was donated to KIXE - Channel 9 in Redding, CA for their Art Auction in April 2002. It did well and raised some much-needed money for Scarlett's local PBS station.
