Michigan Quilts

The Michigan Quilt Project has only begun to uncover an enormous body of information on Michigan quilting and its role in Michigan history. As the process of accumulating and analyzing the data continues, we hope to expand our understanding of the role of artmaking in both traditional and progressive forms and contexts, to broaden our knowledge of the contributions of individual quiltmakers to Michigan, and to enhance our sense of place as Michigan citizens. Thus far, no single clearly identifiable style of quilt has emerged as having been initiated in Michigan, nor has any particularly distinctive quiltmaking tradition indigenous to this region been noted. However, it is evident that over the last 150 years many of the quiltmaking traditions practiced in other parts of the country were also found here, and in some instances were especially popular.
