Stained Glass Quilts
Stained glass quilts are pictorial quilts made to imitate the effect of a stained glass window. Stained glass quilts can be pieced, though they are most commonly done in appliqué. When pieced, thin black strips are usually used to imitate the metal leading that separates the pieces of glass in a stained window. Stained glass quilts done in appliqué are usually created on a black or white ground, with strips of black left between the appliquéd pieces. With either technique, asymmetrically cut pieces of bold, jewel-toned fabrics are usually used to imitate the glass itself. Stained glass quiltmaking became popular in the 1980s, and stained glass quilts continue to be made today.
