Gasperik 04: Kit Quilts

Mary Gasperik's quilts reveal a fondness for playing with the elements of commercially available quilt kits. Calico Rose, which may have been her first attempt at such a kit, is the only kit quilt she made without substantial changes of her own. She experimented with borders, hues, and background quilting patterns, as well as appliquéd elements of her own invention or from other patterns.

Merikay Waldovogel and Barbara Brackman researched the Sears National Quilt Contest. Sears Roebuck & Co. with headquarters in Chicago was a financial backer of the 1933 World’s Fair, known as The Century of Progress Exposition. To drum up interest in the Fair nationwide, Sears announced a national quilt contest in January 1933 with prizes totaling $7500.
