Back Cover:
Lasansky and Bucknell University made a major contribution to the slowly growing body of serious quilt research by convening this landmark symposium on problems, process, and findings in the field. With this publication it will now reach a wider audience.
-- Katy Chistopherson, consultant, Kentucky Quilt Project/director Kentucky Heritage Quilt Society.
The Bucknell Symposium excelled. It brought together, for three glorious days, top scholars and lay people in the quilt field. This exciting volume of those papers will be invaluable for collectors, historians, curators, and librarians.
-- Julie Silber, co-curator Oakland Museum Show, "American Quilts: A Handmade Legacy"
curator, Esprit Quilt Collection
Reviews of the companion volume, In the Heart of Pennsylvania / 19th & 20th Century Quiltmaking Traditions:
It is an excellent record of the quilts discovered. There are insights into the kinds of quilts that were made in the area from its early settlement through the first half of this century, along with exquisite color photos of the quilts and additional black-and-white shots of their makers. The basic questionaire used to gather information will be of interest to quilt historians, and a potpourri of prose, poetry, advice, and how-tos from period newspapers and magazines offers interesting reading for everyone.
-- Louise Townsend for Quilters Newsletter, Summer 1985
The embroidered patchwork cover illustration is exquisite and holds a delightful surprise inside. It is an indication of the meticulous attention to detail one finds throughout the book. The researcher assimilated a quantity of information which is presented in nicely juxtaposed order of text, illustrations and interpretive material .... Superb color reproductions, as well as black-and-white illustrations of quilts, quiltmakers and tools, please the eye. A careful selection of representative types of quilts, and comparisons within groups, shows the rich diversity within the region ... Put this book on your must-order list. It is a prize at an affordable price.
-- Bets Ramsey for the Chatanooga Times, October 10, 1985.
Co-director of Tennessee state quilt project/board member of the American Quilt Study Group
The history of a culture is told by its quilts, carefully documented in this wonderful book. The quilts and background information was gathered over a period of twelve years. Everybody, not just Central Pennsylvanians, will be interested in the book -- the excerpts from magazines and newspapers of long ago are especially interesting. We respect the author and others who carry on this important work.
