Reverse Side of Trapunto Work on Caden Quilt

1933
Waldvogel Ephemera Collection; Waldvogel Archival Collection
Kentucky, United States
Shown is the reverse of a strip of trapunto for the Caden quilt which Mattie Black saved. The green strip is faced with a white fabric, on which has been stamped a fern with a wide stem and leaves. The quilter follows the stamped lines with close stitches. Then each leaf is stuffed with wool by making a small hole in the white cloth and forcing wool into the open space. The trapunto (also called "stuffed work")is what caught the judges' attention.
