Blaire 0. Gagnon taught herself to quilt after her daughter was born and soon opened a quilt shop in Salem, Connecticut. After her family moved to Rhode Is­land, she returned to college and earned a master's degree in textiles, fashion mer­chandising, and design at the University of Rhode Island, completing her thesis on Egyptian appliques in 2002. She is now working on a doctorate in cultural anthropology at the University of Connecticut, focusing on cross-cultural impacts on textile development and marketing.
