The Union County Historical Society's Oral Traditions Project organized a three day symposium in mid-June 1990 where papers were presented in conjunction with a quilt exhibit at Franklin and Marshall College in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. It was published in Bits and Pieces Mother: Symposium Papers, 1991.

The quilt symposium held mid-June 1990 at Franklin and Marshall College in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, could not have been situated at a more beautiful site nor been supported by a more convivial staff. Carol Faill, curator of their collections, in addition to Marilyn Davidson and Gloria Schleicher in their special events office, provided the strong logistical support necessary to carry off a three-day multi-faceted event with speakers and participants from across the country.
As in the past, we were reliante on those volunteers Diana Lasansky, Martha Root, and Elbeth Steffensen to whom we offer our collective appreciation. Presently we are working together again on plans for a symposium in 1993. It will focus on East Coast quilt collections; major quilt documentation projects in Virginia, Maryland, and New Jersey; textile traditions in the Depression and in the Southwest as well as updates on quilt surveys in Pennsylvania and a look at area Amish material culture. That summer Franklin and Marshall College, in conjunction with the Oral Traditions Project, plans to present a major show on New Mexican quilts - the result of my work there under the auspices of the Museum of International Folk Art in Santa Fe.
In the preparation of Bits and Pieces we are particularly indebted to all our authors who worked hard to craft their talks into the following essays and who strove to provide good visuals to illustrate their points. Nancy Roan, Trish Herr, and Tandy Hersh came to Nippenose Valley in Lycoming County where we did much of this year's photography. Also, Joe Foster, the master of the hyphen and the semicolon, gave countless hours as he copyedited for us. All these people made possible, this our fourteenth book. The Oral Traditions Board of Directors - George Jenks, Lindy Mattern, Nancy Ruhl, Gary Slear, Dick Steffensen, Jane Taylor and I - extend thanks to all who helped.
This project is supported in part by a grand from the Pennsylvania Council of the Arts.
