Wonder Packages For You At Only 49c Each Now

by Edith B. Crumb
This department seeks to give assistance to all who are interested in beautifying their homes and will be glad to answer questions pertaining to interior decoration. In order to serve all who, seek advice promptly no more than three problems will be discussed in any one reply. Readers are invited to write to this department as often as they wish, but to limit each letter to three questions. State your question clearly write on only one side of the paper, enclosing a self-addressed, stamped envelope and address Beauty in the Home department, Detroit News. Letters with their answers will be published for the benefit of all homemakers but names and addresses will not be made public.

JUST a little more about that Wonder Package which is being offered for only 49c. There are so many lovely designs in this collection that it is difficult to know just what one to show you; but don’t you think the bowl of flowers in the large illustration is attractive? The full sized pattern measures about 6x8 inches so you can see that it would be just right for the center of a pillow, ends of a scarf, distributed about on a bedspread or used for decorating furniture.

This last suggestion is really one which could be worked out beautifully, especially in a breakfast room. Each leaf of the table may have this designed in the center, and a portion of it may be used for the back of each chair. It is an ideal pattern for painting for it is conventional enough to be followed easily and although it appears to be complicated it has been made with a view to making it possible for one who is not experienced in painting to have no trouble in using it.

SPRAYS FOR CHAIRS.
The sprays at the lower right and left will be effective for the chair backs.

In one of the small illustrations is shown a cross-stitch design of a pot of flowers. This measures about seven by eight inches and with the even marking it will be possible for anyone to work this up very quickly.

In the other small illustration is shown one of the 12 attractive quilt patterns included in this Wonder Package.

This is the rose wreath and one of the most beautiful applique patterns that could possibly have been designed. It is a reproduction of an old one and if you have a four-poster, spool or other old-time type of bed, this quilt would make an appropriate spread.

ROSE AND GREEN.
There might be three tints of rose for the flowers and the leaves could be green. Each block is 11 inches square.

Another thing which may be very valuable to you in this Wonder Package is the sheet on which 21 different kinds of embroidery stitches are described and illustrated. It is just like taking an embroidery lesson to follow the directions on this chart. Stitches that you never thought you would be able to make are explained so simply that you will wonder why you never “tackled” them before.

On the 12 large sheets, each measuring 24x36 inches, there are designs which may be used for applique, piecework, French knots, painting of furniture, glassware, pottery, metal; in fact, it would be difficult to think of a use to which this Package cannot be put as far as decorative possibilities are concerned, for you know the designs may be applied to wood, glass, pottery, metal, cloth, oil-cloth, paper or leather.

METHOD SO SIMPLE.
The method of applying them is so simple—by putting just enough water on the backs to dampen them evenly and then rubbing with the bowl of a spoon or other smooth, hard object. Even the children will find dollars’ worth of amusement in this package for there are many animal designs which may be applied to paper and painted, thus making it possible to make a scrap book.

Of course, you know that in this package there are over 800 different patterns and inasmuch as each may be transferred 12 or more times you will find that there are several thousand actually.

If you wish to call for this Wonder Package it is but 49 cents – but if you would like to have it mailed to you the price will be but 56 cents in order to take care of the postage. It may be called for at the main office of The Detroit News, Second and Lafayette or at The Detroit News Public Service Bureau in either the Majestic building or the General Motors Building. There is a coupon in this column for your convenience. Do not send coin in letters—stamps or a money order being acceptable.

Wonder Package Paragraphs.
LAST Christmas I received a box of candied fruits from California and inasmuch as the box was wooden with a hinged lid having a metal clasp I thought it might come in handy some time.

Well, it certainly has. After buying the Wonder Package I decided to have a make-up box, so I found this wooden candy box, enameled it an on the top transferred a spray of roses from the Package and painted them in natural colors. On the inside of the lid I fitted a mirror and around the edge of the mirror pasted a plain flat braid. It looks as good as anything in the stores and it cost me so very little. I forgot to say that I put a piece of clear glass in the bottom of the box for I like to put powder puffs and rouge boxes in it and with the glass it is so easy to keep clean.

I know that I have some more metal and wooden boxes somewhere around the house (I am always saving boxes) and I intend to look them up and make some bridge prizes.

I don’t intend to stop with this idea, either, for there are so many suggestions in that Wonder Package I don’t think I will ever in all my life run out of patterns for sewing or painting.
(MISS) A. L. R.

You certainly are clever, Miss. R., to make such a lovely box out of almost nothing and if you have some of these tucked away for bridge prizes just think what a relief it will be to know that you do not have to hunt for something different and perhaps have to spend money when you did not intend to do so. When you get to working more with the patterns, be sure to write in and tell what you are doing with them, for your suggestions are very interesting.

What are you doing with your Wonder Package, home makers? The Beauty in the Home column readers are writing and reading about the designs in this package, so why not help others out by sending in your suggestions? They will be greatly appreciated.

Each day there will be a few short paragraphs from the readers, so be sure to drop a line and tell what you are doing with the patterns. Now is the time of the year when the house has to be thoroughly gone over and a few new designs for pillows, lamp shades, furniture, etc., will do a great deal toward making it more attractive.

Quilt Club Corner.
WEDNESDAY will “tell the tale”—that is, it will be decided by then whether you are to have the “Trip Around the World” quilt patterns in two weeks or wait until the latter part of the summer after the Horoscope has been finished.

Remember, it is up to you to decide this and all you have to do is to write a little note or a one-cent postcard and mail it right in to the Beauty in the Home Department or the Quilt Club Corner. Tuesday is the latest you can “vote” and the earlier the better.

HERE I am again to tell of the many nice letters I have received, and also some very nice quilting patterns.

I surely enjoy the Quilt Club corner and can hardly wait for the paper to come each day.

I am starting a Dresden Plate from a News pattern and hope to have it done for the Contest. I certainly intend to be there to see all those pretty quilts. I also listen to the broadcast and enjoy it so much.

I think piecing a quilt is so much more fun than putting jig-saw puzzles together.

I have a top almost quilted that my mother pieced for me this winter.

Best wishes to all.
MRS. FRED COWPER,
R. No. 1, Rockwood, Mich.

Thank you so much for writing again, Mrs. Cowper. It is a pleasure to have your letter and am happy to know that you get so much enjoyment out of the quilt-making, the Corner and the radio.

Quilt Club Corner to Be On Radio
WOULD you like to have letters to the Quilt Club Corner read over the radio? If so, write immediately so that they may be here in time for the broadcast which is at 11:45 every Wednesday over WWJ. Listen in for your own and others and then write and tell the Corner how you like this idea.

Horoscope Quilt Pattern No. 25
HERE it is—pattern No. 25 for the Horoscope quilt and when you send for it be sure to enclose a little note and tell whether you would like to have the “Trip Around the World” within a couple of weeks instead of waiting until the end of the summer when the Horoscope will be finished.

If you call for your leaflets instead of having them mailed, then drop a one-cent post card to the Beauty in the Home Department or the Quilt Club Corner and “vote” for the “Trip Around the World” pattern if you want it. I don’t see how you can resist it. It will be the prettiest you have ever made and everyone who sees it will want to start to cut and sew pieces for one.

The leaflet for this week has the last of the zodiac signs but there are more designs to come for the border.

To receive this leaflet, just send your request for it to the Beauty in the Home Department, The Detroit News, enclosing with it a self-addressed, stamped envelope.

If you prefer, you may call for this reprint from The Detroit News at The Detroit News Public Service Bureau in either the Majestic Building or the General Motors Building, where it will be given you free of charge.

And don’t forget to vote for the “Trip Around the World.”
