Beauty in the Home
Wonder Package Popular at Price of Only 49c

by Edith B. Crumb
This department seeks to give assistance to all who are interested in beautifying their homes and will be glad to answer questions pertaining to interior decoration. In order to serve all who, seek advice promptly no more than three problems will be discussed in any one reply. Readers are invited to write to this department as often as they wish, but to limit each letter to three questions. State your question clearly write on only one side of the paper, enclosing a self-addressed, stamped envelope and address Beauty in the Home department, Detroit News. Letters with their answers will be published for the benefit of all homemakers but names and addresses will not be made public.

THERE is so much to be said about the many uses of the transfers in the Wonder Package and so many lovely designs to show you that I scarcely know just what to select; but those of you who like to make eyelet embroidery would be delighted with the pattern shown in the large illustration.

The full size design measures about 5x7 inches and could be worked in either eyelet or solid embroidery or a combination of these two old-time but beautiful stitches.

This design could also be sued for a painted decoration on a piece of furniture or the front of a book in which photographs are kept on the top of an enameled box.

DIFFERENT USES.
It seems as if every pattern presents many different uses and it is for this reason that the Wonder Package is so valuable to anyone interested in home-making.

In one of the smaller illustrations is a design for the baby’s bib and it may be done in the long French knot, round French knot and lazy-daisy stitches.

And if you do not know how to make all of these, do you know that in this Wonder Package there are 21 different stitches illustrated and explained, so you need never again worry about methods of stitches.

On the same sheet which contains this bib design are designs for other baby garments, carriage robes, straps and every tiny rose-bud and vine designs that would be appropriate for the nursery furniture.

FOR APPLIQUE TOO.
If you like to applique you will find the other small design a fascinating one for this purpose. It is a conventional rose pattern, very easily outlined so that it could be used with silk, linen, cotton, gingham or almost any material. And here is another idea for it. It may be cut from oil-cloth and pasted on plain oil-cloth for the center of curtains or the center of a cornice board. And it is also very interesting for a painted decoration. This Wonder Package, as you perhaps know, has over 800 different patterns for embroidery and painting and there are also 12 of the most fascinating quilt patterns you could ever wish for especially if you like the good old-time patterns.

APPROPRIATE MATERIALS.
These transfers may be applied to cloth, paper, wood, metal, glass, enamel, painted surfaces and for this reason you could scarcely find a way to keep house without one for it is always ready to help you out with a design that will be the one thing needed for a chair, pillow, lamp shade, slip cover, or may fit into any one of a hundred uses for which some decorative motif may be desired.

If you would like to have this pattern mailed to you the cost will be 56 cents and please do not send coins in a letter, but stamps or a money order. If you wish to call for it the price is only 49 cents. This may be called for at the main office of The Detroit news or at The Detroit News Public Service Bureau in either the Majestic Building or the General Motors Building. There is a coupon in this column for your convenience if you wish the Wonder Package mailed to you.

Wonder Package Paragraphs.
I AM sending for one of the Wonder Packages that I heard you tell about on the air last Wednesday.

My husband is very interested in quilts. He has embroidered two and has appliqued two. Now he is ready to mark them for quilting and he thought your Wonder Package might help him out.

He has never tried to piece a quilt, for he likes to embroider better. The last appliqued one he made he button-holed all the flowers and leaves with silk thread and it is beautiful. It took him two months to make it.

He likes to listen to your Quilt Club talks on Wednesdays.
MRS. J. H. H.

I do hope that your husband finds many uses for the patterns in the Wonder Package. For the centers of plain squares there are small flower designs that would be very beautiful when quilted. Thank you for writing.

THE Wonder Package certainly came at the right time for me. I have a little girl who is convalescing and it has certainly been a problem to me to keep her amused.

Well, when the Wonder Package came, I bought some rough finish drawing paper, transferred flowers, birds and animals on it and she has been kept busy painting them. This has kept her amused longer at a time than anything else I have heretofore offered her.

I think that I will cut some squares of white muslin, stamp some of the simple designs on it and show her how to etch or outline and perhaps she will work into quilt-making.
MRS. L. O. M.

That Wonder Package helped two out at the same time and I am sure that you will find many uses for it yourself, Mrs. M.

I AM sending you a money order for 56 cents for the Wonder Package and I can hardly wait until it gets here. And I am going to write and tell you what I am planning to do with some of the patterns. With 800 different ones I should not run out of ideas for a long, long time.
MRS. T. K. W.

Well, now, Mrs. W., the Wonder Package workers will be looking forward to a letter from you after you have received your Package and found out some of its many uses, so don’t disappoint anyone.

Quilt Club Corner.
HERE are just a few of the remarks about the “Trip Around the World” quilt pattern, which will be put out before the Horoscope is finished—that is, if you want it badly enough to let this department know. Letters and cards are coming from many cities and other states, also, “voting” for the early distribution of this pattern, so be sure to send yours in tonight. This is your last opportunity to help decide this question so important to quilt-makers.

PLEASE have the pattern of the “Trip Around the World” sent out before the rest of the Horoscope is finished.
MRS. G. R.

HERE is one “vote” for the “Trip Around the World” pattern to be issued between the Horoscope quilt blocks. Have the latter all caught up to the last leaflet. Best of luck to your column.
E. T. M.

I ALWAYS listen to the Quilt Club Corner on the radio and am a member of the Club. Do please publish the “Trip Around the World.” I have been waiting for it.

I have my Dresden Plate all finished and the Double Wedding Ring ready to quilt. Enjoy all the letters so much.
E. M. S.

AS I HAVE read your comments on the “Trip Around the World” I have been waiting for it a long time. I am reading your Quilt Club Corner every night and think it is so interesting.
A NEWS READER.
M. G. K.

WOULD like very much to see the new “Trip Around the World” quilt pattern, to be put out at your earliest convenience.
MRS. A. P.

PLEASE add my vote to those in favor of the “Trip Around the World” quilt pattern. I am anxious to start on one as soon as the pattern is available. I want to thank The Detroit News for making it possible for us to receive these wonderful patterns.
MRS. J. E. E.

LET’S have the “Trip Around the World” quilt pattern as soon as it is possible to get it out. Much success to the Quilt Club Corner.

I HAVE all the Horoscope patterns so far, but have not started to make it yet. Am surely anxious to get the “Trip Around the World” so please don’t keep us waiting any longer.
MRS. B. E. F.

I AM very anxious to get at the “Trip Around the World” quilt so will be glad if it comes out right away. So glad you suggested that as it will take up the time between the Horoscope blocks.
MRS. L. M.

I can never tell you how I enjoy the Quilt Club Corner. I look for it every evening the very first thing.

I have kept many of the letters. I am sending my vote to have “The Trip Around the World” pattern printed before the finishing of the Horoscope quilt.

I saw the piece of the Horoscope quilt in the Majestic Building Detroit News Public Service Bureau and think it’s the most beautiful quilt I have ever seen.

I have written this week to one of our Quilt Club members. How I wish I might be able to get out and call on all that give the addresses. Maybe I will when the warm weather comes.

Hoping our Club will last for many years to come.
MRS. C. K. M.

I JUST can’t express in words how much I think of your Corner. I’ve written in twice before and I just must hear from some of you this time.

From your Corner I get many wonderful ideas that I think if I put in my little worry maybe some of you can tell me if it’s worth while worrying about or not.

I’ve made two Flower quilts and am now working on the Dresden Plate and the Horoscope. My Horoscope quilt is worked with yellow and black and there are all kinds of patch pieces for the stars. My! I’ve cut and sewed so many stars I see stars in my sleep and I’ve embroidered the different signs and the characteristics for each sign that I’ve memorized them and can tell anyone her horoscope. Quite a character reader one gets to be with all those pieces to chainstitch.

Will the lady who forwards the design for quilting the Double Wedding Ring please mention whether she would mind sending me one if I give her my address? I live on the west side near Rough Park and I have a small baby and just don’t get a chance to meet with any of the club members, but I would like to hear from someone on the west side who quilts and would exchange ideas with our little circle of five.

We have come to the conclusion that is very necessary to shrink all the muslin and circles for the Dresden Plate before they are sewed down, as otherwise they pucker up quite a bit after being washed.

I am nearly finished with my Dresden Plate and Horoscope quilts and I certainly don’t feel like ripping all and shrinking all the materials and yet if they will pucker so after washing, they won’t be a bit pretty. Do you ladies give that idea a thought at all? I often think it’s not a bit necessary but maybe—as I’m quite an amateur—I am mistaken. Here’s hoping that I may hear from some of you through the Corner, or if you wish, mention it and I will write again. So here’s best of luck to all of you from a constant listener and follower of all your activities. You may either print this if it’s not too long or broadcast it, but withhold my name for the time being.
MRS. M. S.

As long as you do not wish to have your name published, I will certainly withhold it, but I do not keep records that make it possible for me to forward any letters to those who do not wish to have their names printed. You may look for your answers through the Corner only. You should see a great deal on the question of shrinking for all will have something to offer, I am sure, and it will be very interesting.

Quilt Club Corner to Be On Radio
WOULD you like to have letters to the Quilt Club Corner read over the radio? If so, write immediately so that they may be here in time for the broadcast which is at 11:45 every Wednesday over WWJ. Listen in for your own and others and then write and tell the Corner how you like this idea.

Horoscope Quilt Pattern No. 25
HERE it is—pattern No. 25 for the Horoscope quilt and when you send for it be sure to enclose a little note and tell whether you would like to have the “Trip Around the World” within a couple of weeks instead of waiting until the end of the summer when the Horoscope will be finished.

If you call for your leaflets instead of having them mailed, then drop a one-cent post card to the Beauty in the Home Department or the Quilt Club Corner and “vote” for the “Trip Around the World” pattern if you want it. I don’t see how you can resist it. It will be the prettiest you have ever made and everyone who sees it will want to start to cut and sew pieces for one.

If you prefer, you may call for this reprint from The Detroit News at The Detroit News Public Service Bureau in either the Majestic Building or the General Motors Building, where it will be given you free of charge.
