Beauty in the Home
Wonder Package Bargain at Price of Only 49c

by Edith B. Crumb
This department seeks to give assistance to all who are interested in beautifying their homes and will be glad to answer questions pertaining to interior decoration. In order to serve all who, seek advice promptly no more than three problems will be discussed in any one reply. Readers are invited to write to this department as often as they wish, but to limit each letter to three questions. State your question clearly write on only one side of the paper, enclosing a self-addressed, stamped envelope and address Beauty in the Home department, Detroit News. Letters with their answers will be published for the benefit of all homemakers but names and addresses will not be made public.

IT is easy to see why there is such a rush for The Detroit News Wonder Package, for any home-maker has only to hear that she can get over 800 transfer patterns for 49c and she won’t lose a minute before seeing about it.

And this is just the time of the year to get it, for with spring housecleaning and freshening very near, how could anyone ever hope to get along without this Wonder Package? In it are designs for the decoration of furniture, draperies, slip-covers, lamp shades, waste baskets, clothes, well! One could just keep right on telling of the many attractive uses to which these may be put; and still more may be thought of by some one who has started to use it.

You know, of course, that these transfers may be applied to wood, glass, metal, cloth, paper, leather, oil-cloth, in fact, almost any surface upon which you might wish a painted or embroidered decoration.

GRAPES ATTRACTIVE.
In the large illustration are four different designs. The long trailing vine of grapes is one which would be very attractive for a beverage tray, for it may be repeated (end to end, or center to center) to make it long enough to cover a long, narrow tray.

This spray could also be used for curtains, valances or furniture.

The three small fruit designs are attractive for appliques on unbleached muslin, linen or checked gingham luncheon sets. If made of gingham, the edges may be fringed, for this makes an easy method of finishing and it is also one of the latest styles.

The spray measures 3 ½ by 10 inches and the other ones are three and four inches square. The grape design may be done in solid embroidery on white linen if a very rich appearing runner, luncheon cloth or towel is desired. The other two designs do not lend themselves to the solid embroidery but are more effective in applique or etching.

FOUR-POINTED STAR.
In the small illustration is shown one of the 12 quilt patterns shown in the Wonder Package. This is called the Four Pointed Star and may be made of three different kinds of material; and is of nothing more than one square with triangles. It is also an old-time pattern and one which would make an attractive bedspread. In old blue and white it would have an antique appearance even when brand new. If you will select your materials carefully you will find that there are many reproductions of old-time calicos that work up into quilts to give them that aged effect.

If you have not already purchased a Wonder Package, do not wait too long to do so for the supply is limited and the demand is certainly great. If you wish to call for it at the main office of The Detroit News or The Detroit News Public Service Bureau in either the Majestic Building or the General Motors Building price is only 49 cents, but if you would like to have it mailed to you, it will cost 56 cents. Please do not send coin in letters, stamps or money orders being acceptable.

WHERE TO CALL.
And have you noticed that there are little paragraphs from those who are using the Wonder Package? Why not write in what you have found out in the way of novel uses for designs?

Just drop a little note or a post card to the Beauty in the Home Department, The Detroit News, and watch the “Wonder Package Paragraphs” for notes on this.

Wonder Package Paragraphs
There have been many wonderful suggestions for the Wonder Package lately. I, too, have the Package and have found many uses for it, as I use it for the children’s clothes, etc. Just now I am using the kitchen towel transfers.
MRS. G. P.

It does not take long, Mrs. P., to find many uses for the patterns in this Package and I am glad that you sent for one.

I have always wanted an attractive waste basket for the sun-room, for I sit out there a great deal and sew.

I bought a metal one, which was anything but attractive and refinished it in green enamel.

Then I transferred a basket of flowers on one side, painted it in different colors of enamel and you should see what a beauty it really is. I thought I would try to find an oval one and do something similar to it and use it for a magazine rack.

I know that is just the beginning of my decorating “activities” for one just can’t have that Wonder Package in the house without trying to think of things for which the different designs may be used.
MRS. I. L. W.

It just takes little things to make such a big difference in a room, Mrs. W., and that waste basket must be a source of satisfaction to you to be able to add these touches to your home at small cost.

Quilt Club Corner.
I VOTE “Yes” for the “Trip Around the World” pattern. I have finished the Dresden Plate quilt top and it is beautiful. I have started the Winged Square quilt.
MRS. D. C.

I AM very glad to cast my vote also for the “Trip Around the World” quilt pattern before finishing the Horoscope quilt.

I think it will work up to a quicker finish. Although I enjoy working on the Horoscope quilt, it drags a little. Perhaps I am in too big a hurry. I would like to have two quilts ready for the Contest, if it is possible and permissible.
MRS. C. L. D.

Yes, of course, you may bring two quilts to the Contest, as long as they are both made from Detroit News patterns.

I AM not a Club member, but I have sent for the Double Wedding Ring and the Flower Garden quilt patterns. I have not started them as I have not been able to get my materials because I want the best, but will start as soon as I can get them.

If I don’t have a quilt to put in the Contest, may I go to see them?

I am at a loss as to just how to make a quilt from beginning to end. May I visit some of the Quilt Club Corner members? I will greatly appreciate hearing from any one that I may visit. I want a quilt so badly and read the Corner with great interest and never miss your broadcasts on Wednesdays.

Hope to hear from someone in the Corner. A card will do. Thank you. I remain,
ELLEN LEONARD
5857 Forsythe Ave., Detroit, Mich.

Certainly, you may come to the Contest. There will be many, many there who love quilts but have not had an opportunity to make one. Perhaps you may be able to finish one before it is held.

I READ about the new quilt called the “Trip Around the World” and I am anxiously awaiting it.

I have only made one other quilt-the Dresden Plate-and want to start another.
MRS. G.

I WILL be pleased to have the “Trip Around the World” pattern published as soon as possible. I am not making the Horoscope but have many other patterns caught up so am waiting.
MRS. F. F.

VERY glad to learn from your paper that you are planning to run the “Trip Around the World” pattern before finishing the Horoscope, for I had just about given up ever being able to get that pattern and will be looking forward to receiving the leaflet and plan to send for it just as soon as it is ready for distribution. It is certainly good news as I had written you about it quite some time ago.
MRS. T. L.

I AM in favor of having the quilt pattern, “The Trip Around the World,” before the Horoscope patterns have all been published, as they are going to take quite a while yet, and I am not making that one.
MRS. L.

I AM a silent member of the Quilt Club Corner and am in favor of putting out the pattern of the “Trip Around the World” if so many wish it.

I have made a Dresden Plate, also a Peek-a-Boo quilt and am working on the Horoscope now. I do not get much time to sew on it as I have lots of work to do. I am enclosing my membership coupon so as to join the Quilt Club, and if I can, may enter a quilt. Will perhaps write again.
MRS. WM. R. A.

Don’t say “perhaps” you will write again. Just sit down and write, for the Quilt Club Corner readers are always anxious for more letters and your will be looked forward to an appreciated.

Quilt Club Corner to Be On Radio
WOULD you like to have letters to the Quilt Club Corner read over the radio? If so, write immediately so that they may be here in time for the broadcast which is at 11:45 every Wednesday over WWJ. Listen in for your own and others and then write and tell the Corner how you like this idea.

Horoscope Quilt Pattern No. 25
HERE it is—pattern No. 25 for the Horoscope quilt and when you send for it be sure to enclose a little note and tell whether you would like to have the “Trip Around the World” within a couple of weeks instead of waiting until the end of the summer when the Horoscope will be finished. If you call for your leaflets instead of having them mailed, then drop a one-cent post card to the Beauty in the Home Department or the Quilt Club Corner and “vote” for the “Trip Around the World” pattern if you want it. I don’t see how you can resist it. It will be the prettiest you have ever made and everyone who sees it will want to start to cut and sew pieces for one.

The leaflet for this week has the last of the zodiac signs but there are more designs to come for the border.

To receive this leaflet, just send your request for it to the Beauty in the Home Department, The Detroit News, enclosing with it a self-addressed, stamped envelope.

If you prefer, you may call for this reprint from The Detroit News at The Detroit News Public Service Bureau in either the Majestic Building or the General Motors Building, where it will be given you free of charge.

And don’t forget to vote for the “Trip Around the World.”
