Horoscope Quilt - Pattern No. 28
Taurus

By Edith B. Crumb.

Don't you think you are going to enjoy the patterns given for the border blocks? They seem so rollicking and so jolly. The body of the quilt had been almost as sober as the sensible part of grandmother's almanac, while the border patterns make one think of the jokes which used to be tucked in here and there.

These designs are useful for other things besides quilts. They might be used for pillow tops and one or more might be used as a border on a scarf or even a hanging. Of course, I would not suggest trying to use the entire set of 12, because I would not want one's whole house to be like an almanac, but they really come in useful for other articles. One design may be repeated numberless times.

There are many legends and beliefs which have grown up around this sign. The earth is green and flowery during the period when the Taurus stars are riding high in the heavens. So it is only natural that the green of the emerald should enter in somewhere. The emerald is the birth stone. The hawthorne is the favorite flower. That makes you remember the old rose or pale blue which was suggested for use in the zodiac sign.

The planet Venus is important, so the ancients believed, in the Taurus month and so we find Taurus people are fond of beauty, are magnetic and lovely.

The pattern as given today is to be traced on the border strip or onto a six and one-half inch square which is later set into the border. These jolly animals and figures are worked in heavy outline or chain stitch all around the border of the quilt.

In the figure of the human being which was found in every almanac the Taurus sign was most closely related to the neck of the figure. Perhaps the outstanding characteristics is the persistence and etermination that reminds one of the proverb, "Constant dripping wears the stone away."
