Horoscope Quilt - Pattern No. 35
Sagittarius

By Edith B. Crumb.

Here is the design for the ninth border block. The quilt-makers must all be good needlewomen by this time but even so you will be glad that the border designs are nto appliqued but designed for embroidery in outline or chain stitch. This archer will look brave and sure in his place on the border.

What that place will be is a matter of personal arrangement. Some members have planned to make the entire border a repetition of six-inch embroideries. Others are putting in 14 - four on each side to correspond to the four rows of the signs, three at the end in line with the three blocks and three at the top. Since there are only 12 signs in the zodiac it is necessary to repeat two of them. One suggestion is to repeat the one which belongs to you as the maker, or use the zodiac sign appropriate for the recipient if you plan to give the quilt away. Then choose harmonious zodiac sign for the other needed one. With Sagittarius as the zodiac sign chosen because it represents a birth month, choose the harmonious sign in this order - first choice, Leo; second, Aries; third, Libra; fourth, Aquarius; and fifth, Gemini.

The turquoise is the birth or lucky stone of the Sagittarians. Their favorite color, as we said earlier, is purple and their flower is the holly. Tuesday is the lucky day and two the lucky number.

The Sagittarians usually reverence the Diety and are inclined to do some prophesying on their own account.

They are fairly successful in business but are apt to leave a thing before it is finished. The Gemini folk are rather fickle because they saw two sides of a question, but the Sagittarians are more restless than fickle.

Work the archer with at least two strands of blue embroidery (or the same number, of course, that you are using on the other signs) and be sure to make the stitches close together. For this design, like all the border onews, needs heavy outlining lest it look weak and insignificant.

Some of the members may use this design for towel and scarf ends. Others may use it on a pillow. In any case, it's a good design for decorative purposes and will doubtless appear frequently in you household as well as in the homes of other members.
