Old-Time Nosegay - Leaflet No. 14

By Edith B. Crumb.

As planned, the quilt - when finished - measures 90x106 inches. This is the size for a double bed. The width for a single bed should be 72 inches and for a three-quarter size bed 82x84 inches. The length remains the same no matter what the size of the bed may be.

To get the narrower width you may applique the center bouquets on squares smaller than 15 1/2 x 15 1/2 inches or you may narrow the plain strip which joins the border to the center panel. When this is done the bottom plain strip must be narrowed to equal the side strips and the needed length for the finished quilt must be added to the top plain strip. The flowers on the border are planned to curve from bottom strip at corners where it joins side strip. To do this the spacing must be planned for in advance if the dimensions are changed from those given in the original.

Colors For Border.
If possible, in making the border use the same colors for the flowers as selected for the large bouquets but vary the print. Do not use a print on a white background. It loses its effectiveness against the background. Keep print designs small.

As given before on one of the first leaflets, the amount of material required for the background of the top is 9 yards, or 18 yards of plain material for the entire quilt.

The diagram on this leaflet shows the finished sizes for the different sections of this quilt. Here are the sizes for cuttin with seam allowances made.

Strip Measurements.
Twelve flower blocks (marked "A" in diagram) 15 1/2 x 15 1/2 inches. These you already have cut for your nosegays.
Two side flower border strips (marked "B") 6 1/2 inches by 100 1/2 inches.
One end flower border strip (marked "B") 6 1/2 by 78 1/2 inches.
Two side scallop strips (marked "S") 6 1/2 by 106 1/2 inches.
One end scallop strip (marked "S") 6 1/2 by 90 1/2 inches.
One top plain piece (marked "PT") 24 inches by 66 1/2 inches.
Two side plain pieces (marked "PB") 11 inches by 66 1/2 inches.
One bottom plain piece (marked "PB") 11 1/2 inches by 66 1/2 inches.

When top is finished plan the quilting design. Mark it lightly with a sharp, medium soft pencil. All applique designs are quilted one-quarter inch from the edge. Fine cross-hatched diamonds may be used for blocks, border and scallops. A design of padded bowknot and flowers may be used in plain strips and on large piece of plain material that covers the flowers. Here diamonds would be used for the background.

Mark Scallops.
Mark scallops for edges, but do not cut until after the quilting is finished. To prepare the lining, seam lengths on machine, first cutting off selvages. Allow lining of quilt to be two inches larger than top of quilt. This gives material to pin or fasten to quilting frames without danger of tearing the material of the quilt.

After the bottom is on the quilting frames (and be sure to put it on with the seam side up) lay on the interlining. Do not let it get bunched. Do not have it too thick. Lay top on. Fasten three materials together securely. Quilt. Make a fine knot at end of thread which goes into body of quilt. In finishing a quilting thread take three stitches back on quilting just done, then run needle into body of quilt bringing it out and leaving end of thread buried in the body of the quilt.

Take quilt from frames, cut the scallops already marked for edges and bind. Do not have binding too wide.
