Brother-Sister Quilts-Leaflet No. 9

By Edith B. Crumb.

You might start to put some of your blocks together now. For the background material I suggest a blue and white fine stripe (such as shirting or fine percale). Cut 17 block which are six and one-half inches square.

For the first row of the center of the quilt seam a striped block on to the right hand side of the train block. Now seam a drum block on the right hand side of the striped block. Then a striped block on the right hand side of the drum block and finally a ship on the right side of the striped block. This gives you a strip of blocks in this order: train, striped block, drum, striped block, and ship. For the second row arrange this way: striped block, tree block, striped block, tree block and striped block. Seam the first ans second strips together so that the first striped block of the second row is under the train. This gives a checker-board effect with the striped alternating with the appliqued block both across and diagonally.

No we are ready to make the dog block. The first one appears in the first block of the third row. The second appears in the far right hand side of the fifth strip.

Used checked, plaid or cross-barred material and in cutting be sure that the squares are on the straight of the pattern. Also be sure to allow for turning in the raw edge. This allowance may be one-eighth or one-quarter inch.

After the two dogs have been cut, cut the ear and collar. Be sure to allow for raw edges on these also.

Pin and baste the dog in place on the square. Applique. The applique the collar and the ear.

Embroider the eye in white, using solid embroidery.

The dog may be in brown and white or black and white check with an orange color and a white and yellow spotted ear.
