Laurel Wreath Quilt - Leaflet No. 9
Crane's Bill
Such a nice well-bred flower as this Crane's Bill looks to be. It almost cries aloud for striped madras from men's shirting! But there are difficulties in using that. It lacks character because of its white background when put in a quilt with other stronger colored and patterned materials.
You might use a figured rose and white material and it would be a good idea to insert a narrow piping of plain rose and use it to outline the petals as they overlap.
The petals should be pinned in place and later appliqued on to a 10 1/2x12 1/2 inch block.
For the center you may use deep purples or light green and you would find yellow attractive. The stamens should be worked in heavy outline or in a heavy stem stitch. The color most appropriate for this would be green.
You may experience a little difficulty in getting that pretty point and graceful curve at the tip off the petals, but by sniping into the material just a bit they will achieve graceful contours.
