Laurel Wreath Quilt - Leaflet No. 10
Fringed Gentian
The Fringed Gentian as shown on this leaflet would be attractive in blue. There are blue prints with white designs in them that have something of the fluid and fringe effect of this flower.
The design should be pinned in place and basted on a 10 1/2x12 1/2-inch block.
When the appliqueing is finished there is the embroidering of the fringe. Medium deep blue may be used for this.
If you wish you may develop this flower in the red purple shades and use red purple embroidery cotton. Be sure to choose fast color thread. The stitch of just one strand is made by starting the needle from the wrong side, bringing it up to the right side and then putting it down a short distance about one-third of an inch from where it came through.
In some cases the stitch may be made in two parts, half of it extending from the edge of the flower into the petal and the other half of it extending from the same hole on the edge of the petal to outer background. This may be done to give a more ragged effect.
