Daisy

Did you ever notice that there is something about a daisy that makes you realize what an appropriate name it has - Day's Eye - the start of a fresh new day. In making this daisy, however, it is suggested that you follow a scheme of white and yellow for the white petals will be lost against the background of the quilt.

You might make the daisy of pink, possibly with white dots of with small white flowers. The center may be soft yellow or light orange. And, of course, you might make it into a Black Eyed Susan with soft orange petals and a brown center.

It is well to remember that in making this quilt it is possible to use more brilliant colors for the flowers and birds than we do ordinarily in quilt-making. The reason for this lies in the fact that the large number of soft green leaves call for more color in the appliqued flowers and birds.

This flower is to be appliqued to a 12 1/2x12 1/2 inch block, which is the last one one the second row of the quilt. The center is not put on until all the petals have been appliqued. Then it is appliqued with invisible hemming stitches that are taken on a slant. The dotted line indicates that the stem goes under the petals and that the leaves go under the stem. That means they go in place first, then the stem, then the petals and finally the center.

In placing the flower, be sure that the arrangement is similar to that of the small drawing. The stem curves but the daisy stands upright within its laurel wreath.
