Harebell

There may be more showy flowers than the Harebells, as of course there are, but certainly no single bloom that is more delightful for the garden. The blue color of the dainty bells that hang on pendulous, slender stems is a beautiful carpeting for many a garden spot. And then in contrast to the coral bells and the low and tall veronica of another shade of blue with the colored Sweet William close by - well, there is an idea for a perennial border!

You will notice that there are three flowers. Two shades of blue can be used nicely, or use one plain blue, delicate in coloring, and then use a print for the other flower. The tiny points of the one bell that is standing upright, rather than drooping as it would be in real life, may be developed in a deeper blue.

This flower is to be appliqued to a block 12 1/2 inches by 10 1/2 inches. These rectangular blocks are placed second and fourth in each row. Later, after the blocks are arranged, they are seamed to the 12 1/2-inch squares on each side of them. Then the leaves which are on the outer edge of the wreath on the rectangular blocks are appliqued in place so they reach over on to the square blocks. In this way the effect is that of a continuous wreath.

Place the leaves first, then the stems, then tip of top bell, then the top bell, next the darker flower and lastly the light one down in front. Be sure the stem is placed so that its curve follows that shown in the small drawing at the top of the picture.
