Two Quilt Shows in Day Was Last Week's Record

By Edith B. Crumb

Last Friday was an important one for the members of Olive Circle of the Women's Union of Trinity Presbyterian Church, Central and Whittaker avenues; for they held a quilt show and tea; and judging from the interest shown by those attending it was a big success.

With Mrs. Laverne Thomas as president, Mrs. F.C Weber chairman and Mrs. B McLennan assistant chairman of the exhibit things just hummed and even after I arrived quilts were coming in for display. They were on tables, over pianos, and every place possible.

Prize Winners
The prizes were awarded as follows:
Modern completed appliqued quilts, 1st Margie King, 1895 Green avenue, 3nd Mrs. George Nestman, 2420 Carson Avenue

Applique tops only (one prize) Mrs. O Johnson 8165 Chamberlin Avenue

Antique (appliqued) Mrs. W.O. Benjamin, 1037 Green Avenue

Modern completed piecework quilts, 1st Mrs. Mary Kelly 2450 Richton avenue; 2nd Mrs. Charles Enright, 953 Moran Street, Lincoln Park

Pieces tops only (one prize) Minnie Henderson 1910 Cabot avenue Antiques (pieced) Mrs. Charles Enright 953 Moran Avenue, Lincoln Park

This circle was started 18 years ago in a little tin building at the corner of Semple avenue and ever since then they have carried on successfully.

Oxford Show Also
On the same day Priscilla Circle of the Methodist Church of Oxford, held a quilt show and antique exhibit, equally as successful as that held by the Olive Circle

Mrs. Charles Whitcomb was chairman of the exhibit and was assisted by Mrs. Geo Tunstead, Mrs. Geo Millspaugh, and Mrs. Volney Miller. This show was held two days and two evenings.
Asides from a display of unusually attractive old and new quilts there were old pink listre teapots, sugar bowls, cream pitchers, rare old shawls, a Bennington hound pitcher, and hate which looked very much as if they had stepped right out of the book of Little Women.

China Headed Doll
There was one very lovely old china headed doll when she was a little girl. That was a real treat to meet Miss Cadogan for it is my first experience seeing the original owner of a doll of this type.

There was one very lovely needle point rug of flowers done on a black background, all in cross stitch (wool) and there were also many hooked rugs.

I was delighted to see some home spun linen, which had once been the covering of a husk mattress, made into a table cloth, finished with Italian hemstitching. This fine old material should be given prominence.

It is very evident that Oxford people appreciate their heirlooms for the lovely old quilts and rare articles show that they have been carefully kept and cherished-which is as it should be.

An S.O.S
Dear Miss Crumb: I spent most of Sunday at the quilt show. I surely did enjoy every minute of it and wouldn't have missed it for anything. I have not missed one yet. I wonder if any of the members have the pattern called "Rob Peter to Pay Paul" or the one called 'sunshine and Shadow." I would like to get these patterns and would send others in exchange for them or pieces if they were preferred.
Mrs. A Klein
5326 Bewick avenue

I do hope Mrs. Klein that someone who has these patterns will get in touch with you. They are not News patterns, but Rob Peter to Pay Paul is a very, very old one and Iam sure you won't have any trouble finding it.

Wants Letters
Dear Miss Crumb: I am a daily follower of the Quilt Club Corner and have sent in my name for membership. I would like to hear from some of the quilt makers.
