Sweet and Low Quilt Pattern

Here is a simple but interesting pattern; simple because it is one of those which have only two sizes of patches to cut. Here again is an opportunity to use up some of those little odd corner patches, that is, if one wishes to use prints. If plain materials are preferred, a color scheme is suggested here which will work out very nicely and one which will fit in with just about any bedroom color scheme.

At any rate, whether prints or plain colors are used, cutting directions will be easier to follow if it is kept in mind that all black parts in the accompanying sketch are meant to indicate a dark rich brown; all dotted parts orange, and all the white sections a light yellow.

These 12-inch blocks should be set together without any intervening strips or plain blocks. Variety in the pattern is obtained by turning every other block around so it faces the other way.

Following is the yardage required: 2 3/4 yards orange, 2 2/3 yards brown, 4 yards yellow. A good size for the quilt is 80 by 92 inches. This will take 30 blocks; 5 across and 6 down, with a 10-inch border. The border requires 3 yards of yellow and the back of the quilt will take 6 yards. Thus, if the background of the blocks, the border and the back are all of the same material, it will total 12 1/2 yards of the yellow.

Three-sixteenths inch for seams is allowed for on this pattern, so make your seam allowance by cutting the size shown on dotted lines. The best way is to trace diagrams on cardboard and cut them out actual size. When the cardboard is laid on the cloth either draw around it with a pencil, or just hold it firmly while you cut around, which will allow for the seams.

The back of this quilt may be plain yellow and the binding match the deepest color of the patches.

The quilt may also be made in a red, white and blue, the light yellow may be white and the orange red.

If one is looking for a quilt which would be appropriate for a boy's room, this will be found an ideal design, for it is not one of those dainty little designs that boys hate so because their sisters like them.
