Quilt of Unusual Design, Planned as a Surprise

FOR three months the members of the Ladies’ Aid of Faith Lutheran Church, Philip and Jefferson avenues, planned and made a quilt which was to be a surprise present to the Rev. and Mrs. R. D. Linhart. It was given to them at the annual meeting of the congregation.

This was no simple task-the designing and making of this quilt. It was decided to have one with the names of all of the members and their families embroidered on it, but just how to go about this was something to be figured out.

An idea about this type of quilt was sent by Mrs. Paterson’s mother, Mrs. N. S. Johnson, of Clinton, Iowa, and Mr. Paterson made the design.

That was just a start for the colors had to be decided upon, the names written and embroidered.

It was determined that a white background would be the most effective, the corners of the blocks were of orchid and green triangles and the cross in the center purple with the names embroidered in green.

So with Mrs. Paterson as chairman of the quilt project and Mrs. Vengelers, president of the Ladies’ Aid, the quilt was soon put into work and there was a general call for volunteers. Just the writing of the names presented a problem and Mrs. Gretchen Short came nobly to the front and helped out with this, so that the writing would be uniform.

The embroidering of the names was given to volunteers, of which there were plenty and the quilt was done in time for the surprise presentation.

Because there were so many names to be included, a deadline had to be set and even so there were so many that the border contains many for which there was not sufficient space on the body of the quilt.

Each block contains 24 names radiating from the center circle with cross, the back of the quilt is lavender and the binding green.

Trip Almost Finished.
Well, it has been a long time since I have written in to the Corner but here I am to tell you that I have been making quilts.

I was so sorry that I missed the quilt contest. My husband and I went North as the hunting season was on.

Well, I have my Trip almost finished. I have kept track of the number of squares. I have 1,881 squares, and there are two more rows to put on. I certainly enjoyed putting these squares together.

I hope we have another Contest this year.

I spent a whole day with Mrs. Lawson on Cherrylawn. We cut and sewed pieces.

It certainly is a long time since you have written to the Corner, Mrs. Crocker, and don’t you neglect us that way again.

You should be sorry that you missed the Contest, but you must have had a nice time up North.

Every one seems to enjoy making the Trip Around the World quilt and find it so interesting to cut, plan and sew.

Mrs. Lawson is one of a crowd of quilt-makers and must know a good many short cuts to help beginners along.

An attractive salad is made by scooping out the centers of large red apples and filling the cavities with chopped nuts and celery.
