Youngsters Make Quilts to Enter in News Show
By Edith B. Crumb

Many interesting quilts are being entered by little girls and teen agers in the quilt show to be held May 24, 25 and 26 at the Naval Armory. Florence Walsh, 1541 Fullerton avenue, has entered a quilt which she embroidered, pieced and quilted all by herself. She was nine years old when she started it and now she is just 10.

Norine O'Neill, 3931 Sixteenth street, has entered a unique spread for a child's bed. It has 42 blocks of bunnies and mind you, every little bunny is wearing a different suit. They are just about the best dressed bunnies you ever saw.

Phyllis Bender, 624 Fourth street, Fort Wayne, Ind., is 13 years old and an art student. She entered a lovely quilt which she has designed and made herself. She calls it Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.

There are many quilts for children's beds. One I happened to see on one of my short trips to the quilt receiving office was made from the Detroit News circus pattern.

You have no idea how the quilts and spreads are piling up sky high. Just as soon as possible they are checked and rechecked, entered on our big long list and packed in cartons.

Almost everyone who comes in with an entry has an interesting story. I am sorry I cannot stay down there all day long and tell you all I hear, for I know you will be so interested.

Yesterday I was talking with Mrs. Mary Ainsworth, 1433 Parker avenue. Mrs. Ainsworth entered a quilt and an afghan. The quilt was of silk pieces and made like one huge block of a grandmother's flower garden.

The afghan, which has 18 different colors of wool in it, became a problem of arrangement until she took three as a starting point and worked out from them. The three were red, green, and yellow, taken from the traffic signal.

Have you sent in your coupon for your quilt show entries yet? Please do so right away, for Saturday, May 18, is the final date for accepting quilts, spreads, and other articles listed.

All entries are to be taken to the quilt receiving office at 827 west Lafayette boulevard, just half a block west of the main building of The Detroit News.
