Here's a Big 'Secret,' So Don't You Tell!
Insert shows Mrs. Ottmer Hoffmeyer, the designer of the blue and white quilt to be presented by the Cradle Roll of Mt. Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church to Reverend and Mrs. William Nies on the tenth anniversary of the church.

By Edith B. Crumb

The members of the Cradel Roll Club of Mt. Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, Gratio and Six Mile Road, decided to make a quilt as a surprise gift to the Revered and Mrs. William Nies on their tenth anniversary of the church.

But somehow or other the "cat was let out of the bag" and in on time at all Mrs. Nies found out about it and, of course, she just couldn't keep a secret.

Nevertheless, there will be just as much joy in receiving it as if it had been a complete surprise and maybe more so to watch its progress certainly must have afforded Reverend and Mrs. Nies considerable pleasure.

Design is Unique
Mrs. Ottmer Hoffmeyer, 12609 Barlow avenue, designed the quilt which has the center motif Luther coat of arms, this also being the center of a large blue cross. The blocks were pieced together by Mrs. Hoffmeyer and Mrs. John Brandt.

Miss Mona Graf, who was vising here from Waterville, O., wrote all the names in the blocks, the names being those of the members of the congregation and their friends, and about eight of the Cradle Roll members embroidered these names.

Robert Wingartner, 16 years old deigned the quilting pattern, and the Mt. Zion quilters did all the quilting and binding, putting on the finishing touches.

On the evening of Oct. 31 there will be in the church a motion picture in celebration of the life of Martin Luther, after which will be a big surprise, the presentation of the quilt to Reverend and Mrs. Neis. Just imagine how astonished they will be!

Hurry Along
And now do you realize that you only have two more days in which to bring your quilts to The News for entry in the big Contest which is held Oct 12, 13, and 14? Don't let those dates deceive you and make you think you have lots of time in which to enter your quilt. October 6 at 5 p.m. is the deadline- and you should see how they are coming in and being piled up.

We plan on having more time are arranging the show this year and this is why October 6 is the last date for entries.

No Address Given
Dear Miss Crumb: will you kindly help me out on a matter that is quite important to me at this time, and that is in regard to the color of furniture to be used in my kitchen?

To begin with, the walls are a tan, door and woodwork dark cak. These colors cannot be changed. There are two window sin the kitchen which face the southeast. Linoleum rug cannot be changed.

I have some new cottage curtains, with tiny green ruffles, and a pattern interwoven through some of the same color: curtains themselves being white.

My stove is sun tan and ivory refrigerator is white.

Will you kindly advise what color to paint the chairs and the table? Do you think there would be too much green to have the furniture painted in green, same shade as that in the linoleum and trimmed with orange, with a little black trimming?

If you will be kind enough to give me your opinion regarding the above, same will be greatly appreciated. I did write you some time ago for some information regarding the color scheme for a room, but never saw my letter in print. However, I know that you have many letter that you cannot take care of, but if you will print your reply to this letter at the earliest possible date, it will be greatly appreciated.
M.E.

Since the room has bright lighting you would do well to paint your furniture the blue green which is in the linoleum and use a line trimming of red-orange. If you like, your table cloths might be the gay plaid ones in orange and black. I should not try to introduce black into the colors of the furniture.

You have given no address and letters such as this are usually a lone time getting into the paper as they have to take their turn. The next time you write, please send a self-addressed, stamped envelope in order that you may have your information on time.

Some More Entries
May I join the Quilt Club? I know almost nothing about quilts but hope to learn a great deal.

I have a rather interesting silk quilt which was finished in 1878. The lining is made of the wedding dress of my great aunt, who was married in 1844, and is in perfect condition.

I have also a family record sampler made by another great aunt in 1834.

Indeed, you may join the Quilt Club and I do hope that you will bring the silk quilt in and also the sampler to the contest for the Antique section. Be sure that they are at The News before Oct. 5. They may be brought any time from Sept. 24 to Oct 5.

Anxious for Contest
It's been ages since I have written to the Club Corner. I have been very busy doing my canning.

Won't Miss Alice Hale please send her new address so that I may send her a new quilt pattern she asked me for?

Miss Crumb everyone is so nice you wouldn't think there were so many nice people in the world. I can hardly wait till the Contest.
Mrs. Jos. Blasko
177 Woodmere, Detroit, Mich.

It is a long time since your name has come in on a letter and I am glad to see you back with us again, Mrs. Blasko.

I hope that Miss Hale sees this and gets in touch with you. Oh, yes, everyone in the Quilt Club is just as nice as she (and now I must say he too) can be; and I know that you will enjoy every minute you spend at the Contest. I should say hour for I know that you will have to stay a long time.
