Twist Weave Rug Selected for This Floor Covering

By Edith B. Crumb

To create a cheery back ground in this bedroom which is one of the five model rooms in the lower level of the new WWJ studios of The Detroit News, wallpaper with yellow predominating has been selected.

The lattice pattern in this paper is formed by white and silver vines. The floor covering in this room is jade green twisted weave carpeting this creating a pleasing contrast with the walls.

Chalk White
The woodwork is chalk white and the window treatment is of white dotted marquisette ruffled curtains. If over draperies were to be used in this room they might be of either yellow or green ground flowered chintz but the windows as they are, are charming without the addition of draperies.

Because the furniture is designed in the manner f that of our grandmothers, a handmade appliqued quilt has been selected for the cotton or batiste edging; or you spread and instead of having this folded over the pillows, pillow shams have been made for this bed.

Surely if the quilts are back the shams should be also! And it is a simple matter to make them if you have not already have some which you can bring back to life!

These shames are made of white percale and trimmed with white organdie embroidered ruffles. They measure (without the ruffles) 22x24 inches but she be cut 25X23 inches in order to take care of the materials which is used up in making three tucks on each of the four sides.

Mitered Corners
The tucks are very narrow (about an eighth of an inch only) spaced about half an inch apart, the first one starting about an inch and a half from the hem. This hem is two and one half inches wide but is not a turned black hem but one that is applied or it might be called a facing! And the corners are mitered corners. The strips forming these hems should be cut about three inches wide to take care of the turning in on each edge.

Each pillow has six yards of ruffling around it and this is inserted in the hem.

When finished these pillow shams should be starched stiffly.

You may use plain organdie for the ruffles or white embroidered cotton or batiste edging; or you may trim them with a flat Clunt or crocheted edging.

Panty Waist Ruffles
Plan your own pillow shams, if you do not, wish to copy these and you might even have ruffles with colored embroidered edges. There is no end to the ways in which these charming articles may be made and if you do not already these, do make a point to come down and see the five model rooms and see how we have trimmed the pillow shams with the good old panty waist embroidery.

Every Wednesday afternoon those who are interested in making them homes more attractive are invited to meet from 2 to 4 o'clock in the assembly room-lower level of the WWJ studios of The Detroit News for the general consultation hour.

These are busy and interesting hours for all. Blue prints are seen throughout the group, samples of wallpaper, carpeting and draperies fly about and all problems are considered seriously and each is given...(clipping cut-off)
