Beauty in the Home
by Edith B. Crumb
This department seeks to give assistance to all who are interested in beautifying their homes and will be glad to answer questions pertaining to interior decoration. In order to serve all who, seek advice promptly no more than three problems will be discussed in any one reply. Readers are invited to write to this department as often as they wish, but to limit each letter to three questions. State your question clearly write on only one side of the paper, enclosing a self-addressed, stamped envelope and address Beauty in the Home department, Detroit News. Letters with their answers will be published for the benefit of all homemakers but names and addresses will not be made public.

To select upholstery fabrics with a view to making them harmonious with the other patterned surfaces in the room really means that the entire scheme is certain to be successful, and in the room as shown in the illustration there is evidence of this method having been followed with the results that the room has beauty as well as comfort.

Comfort, after all, must be the first consideration, and with this in view a luxuriously upholstered sofa and chair have been selected for the fireplace end of the room.

For the floor covering there is a room-sized rug in an old-time hooked rug conventional patter, which in no way conflicts with the design on the sofa covering, which is floral. Still another pattern is shown on the easy chair, but this is a small inconspicuous lattice which.......north or east room as the tone is too cool.

Quilt Club Corner.
I have not finished any quilts yet. Must learn how to quilt first. Am just getting some quilt frames ready to make a start. I have a Double Wedding Ring top made, and this is just a little larger than the pattern I sent for from The Detroit News and I have half the top of a Dresden Plate quilt made.

Now I am anxious to see what kind of pattern this Horoscope quilt is.
MRS. L.

You are certainly going at this quilt-making business in a very earnest way and I hope that you will like the Horoscope pattern. Don’t forget to write again.

I have not started the Horoscope quilt yet as I work and come home late. I’ll try and start it pretty soon.
MRS. M. V.

A little work on the quilt each night, if you can possibly spare the time, will help a great deal in finishing it quickly, and hope you can get at it soon.

Am interested in making a quilt but do not know which pattern to select.

I have a great many scraps of material as I sew quite a bit and had thought of sending for the Dresden Plate design, but did not know if I could use all different patterns of printed material. I’ve never seen a quilt of this design so am at a loss to know whether or not my materials would be suitable. If you think I could like my scraps for this design, please send it to me in the self-addressed, stamped envelope which I am sending, but if not will you kindly mail the one you think suitable.
MRS. J. D.

The Dresden Plate quilt pattern would be very suitable for you to make, as it may be made with all kinds of printed materials and is made up of small pieces.

Another pattern of the Double Wedding Ring, so I am sending both to you so that you may have your choice. Why not drop us a line and tell us what you have selected and how you are getting along?

I have just finished block No. 1 of the Horoscope Quilt and I think is is going to be pretty. I can hardly wait until the next pattern arrives. As a member of your club, I am sincerely,
Mrs. A.R.

You are the first Mrs. P. to report the finishing of the first quilt block. No doubt there are a great many more who have finished theirs but have not told us about it yet. Maybe we will get some more letters about this in a few days.

I am very glad to become a member of the Beauty in the Home Quilt Club. I have completed four quilts in the Dresden Palte design and am very proud of them, and now I am making the Flower Garden quilt. That is certainly pretty and I surely love to make quilts.
Mrs. B.C.
You certainly must love quilt making to spend so much time on them for four Dresden Plate quilts and one of the Flower Garden pattern would keep one very busy for a year, and it is just about a year agoe that the Dresden Plate was sent out so I know that is all you must have spent on them.

I hope I can be a Quilt Club member some day. I have some of them put together but not quilted, I am going to start them as soon as I can so I can be a Club members.
Mrs. C.H.C.

You can be a Club member now for I notice you are sending for the Horoscope quilt patterns and that makes you eligible; so if you have not sent in your application, do not forget to do so right away as I shall be looking for it.

I have just finished the Dresden Plate patetrn quiltm but I got the pattern from a lady friend in Indiana and it surely looks lovely.

While in church work in Cincinnati, I quilted many quilts with the ladies while I lived there. Now as I am 71 years old I can't sit idle and love such work, so I intend to make the Horoscope quilt pattern.
Mrs. H.

You won't be idle, Mrs. H., if you work out that Horoscope pattern this winter and I am sure you will find it interesting and attractive. It was very nice of you to write us that little note. The Club members will love it.

I would like very much to become a member of the Beauty in the Home Quilt Club as I have nearly completed two quilts. I have the Flower Garden quilt nearly finished for my little four-year-old son's room, and it is lovely. I used green and white for the predominating notes.
Mrs. C.B.

That was a very good idea for you to make a quilt for your little boy and with good care it should be kept in excellent condition for years.

Pattern No. 3 of Horoscope Quilt
THE leaflet with pattern No. 3 of the Horoscope quilt has been prepared and is waiting for you and is waiting for you to send your request in for it and, of course, after having worked the first two designs, you will be very anxious to finish the block with the words on the third.

Just send your request for this to the Beauty in the Home Department, The Detroit News, enclosing with it a self-addressed, stamped envelope. If you prefer, you may call for this leaflet at The Detroit News Public Service Bureau in either the General Motors Building or the Majestic Building, where it will be given you free of charge.
