Amusing Quilt in Design for Nursery
The owner of this fascinating quilt is little Donna Jean Dial 16561 Cheyenne avenue, Detroit, and it was designed and made for her by her mother and sister, Mrs. George W Dial and Maron Dial. You will have lots of fun studying the picture and discovering how many of the nursery rhymes you can remember. The inset at the left shows Donna, Jean's mother, Mrs. George W Dial, and that at the left her sister Maron Dial.
Calico Cows Jump Over Moon and Ducks Eat Chambray Worm

There is one very happy little girl in Detroit and her name is Donna Jean Dial. And the reason that she is so very happy is that her mother Mrs. George W Dial and her sister, Maron Dial (15 years old) have made such a fascinating quilt for her.

This quilt was started about two years ago and finished for Donna Jean's fifth birthday; and what a good time she is going to have showing all of the interesting pictures on this quilt to her little friends.

But I am sure that Donna Jean's mother and sister have had a happy time designing and making this quilt.

Orange Calico Elephant.
Just study the picture of this quilt and see how fascinating it is. In the long panel at the top is an orange calico elephant and a yellow calico giraffe. The elephant is from a story that Donna Jean knew-about how the elephant's trunk and the snake its tail to make them long and in the long panel at the bottom of the quilt is a green and lavender alligator scurrying away through some calico waves. To get this design, Maron enlarged the pictures in the magazine.

The building blocks shown in the second square of the second row are so arranged as to spell Donna Jean's name and the little Chinese boy was taken from The Detroit News Wonder package.

Contrary Mary.
The little flowers in Contrary Mary's garden were also taken from the Wonder package and I think that Maron drew the cow jumping over the moon. The checked gingham spoon and the little dog is laughing at the whole performance just as he did when you and I were little.

I think that the little boy in the second row must have lost some of his balloons for he seems to be gazing skyward in search for something and just see how proud that rooster is in the fourth row. He has such beautiful plumage!

Bright Blue Soldiers.
The little soldiers at the upper left are from the Wonder Package and they are smartly dressed in bright blue uniforms. Just below these are two gingham geese struggling for the possession of a brown chambray worm and it certainly looks pretty bad for the worm.

Below the ducks is a clown with a performing dog and the Little Miss Muffit is shown badly frightened at a big black embroidered spider. Her curds and whey being spilled out of a calico bowl.

At the lower left is a block which does not show but I will tell you about it. Donna Jean laid one hand and one foot on the couch and the outline of these were traced and appliqued in plain pink gingham. At the lower right are three geese flying in triangle formation.

Humpty Dumpty, Too!
Above these is Humpty Dumpty- and such a happy expression you never saw! Little does he know that he is going to have such a fall that he can't be pulled together again.

And then we see Nimble Jack jumping over the candlestick above which are the Papa Bear, the Mama Bear and the little Baby bear discussing who's who: and finally we see two gaily spotted gingham whales chatting away with embroidered spouts and bubbles. They seem to be having such a good time riding the gingham waves.

When it came to joining the blocks to make the border, Mrs. Dial wanted a variety of pieces in which blue predominated, so she wrote a request to the Quilt Club Corner and her worries were over for she received more than she could use.

So- do you wonder that Donna Jean Dial is a very happy little girl?
