"Philadelphia Pavement Quilt Pattern

This quilt pattern, called the "Philadelphia Pavement," is one which has been asked for so much that it has been reprinted, so that the quilt-makers may have something especially interesting to work on during their leisure hours.

This pattern requires four rectangles, like diagram No. 3, of colored material; eight squares like No. 1 of white or cream material, one the same size of colored material; four colored triangles like diagram No. 2 of colored material and four of the white or cream.

This is very pretty made of bright red and white, blue and white, all patches being of plan colors; or if one wished, the colored materials could be small figured prints.

Color Arrangment
One way to arrange colors, if more than two are used, would be to have the rectangles and middle square of one color, perhaps light green, and the four colored triangles of apricot or yellow, the rest being of cream or white.

If one is fond of lavender in a quilt, the parts which have been suggested for light green might be medium lavender, the others being a light tint.

Small checked ginghams may be used in place of the prints and in combination with chambray would be very charming.

One should study the color scheme of the room in which this quilt is to be used, and make the predominating color in the quilt to match that of the draperies.

To Make Top.
To make the top of this quilt this square as shown should be alternated with plain white squares of the same size (10 inches square). If you wish to put the extra work and colored material into it, however you may have all the blocks of pieced ones, either being in good taste and a matter of personal choice.

When the top has been pieced together it may be finished all around with a border wide enough to bring the spread down over the sides of the bed the desired length. This border should be of the light material.

Beneath the top should be a layer or cotton batting and then the back or lining laid on, the three thicknesses being basted firmly together in preparation for quilting. The finishing touch to this quilt should be a binding in a material to match the predominating color in the design.

Did you receive last week's quilt pattern offered by this department? The name of it was the "Winged Square," and if you would like to have it, all you have to do is to send your request for it to the Beauty in the Home Department, The Detroit News, inclosing with it a self-addressed, stamped envelope.
