Entry for the State of Michigan in the Hearth and Home State series, 1907-1912: "This is pretty made of three colors, red, white and blue, or any that may be preferred. It may be entirely of pieced work, or joined with plain squares, strips or half-squares, in the 'zigzag' manner, by placing the pieced blocks corner to corner and filling between with the white half-squares, having the corner of the pieced block, in alternate rows, come half-way across the white half-square. This gives the fence-row or zigzag setting. Mrs. Thos. Wood."
