Hawaiian Quilt Research Project

Statement of Purpose

The purpose of the Hawaiian Quilt Research Project is
To research and record the history of Hawaiian quilts and quilt patterns made before 1960;

To research and record the history and traditions of Hawaii's quilt makers;

To research and record the patterns, layouts and styles of Hawaiian appliqued quilts and Hawaiian flag quilts;

To increase public awareness and appreciation of Hawaiian quilts;

To encourage the art of Hawaiian quilt making; and

To engage in education about Hawaiian quilts and quilting through lectures and other activities.

Since 1990, the Hawaiian Quilt Research Project (HQRP), has recorded more than 1,500 Hawaiian quilts and quilt patterns.

HQRP is also recording information about Hawaii's unique quilting traditions. Information collected may determine if there:
is a similarity in pattern designs for each island;
is a unique design style or quilting style for particular decades;
is an opportunity to trace the origin of patterns now considered traditional, etc.

Quilt Days

Approximately sixty quilt documentation projects happening around America as volunteers are recording the history of thousands of handmade quilts. These projects have recorded special stories as well as the history of women and families.

Hawaiian appliqued quilts, Hawaiian flag quilts, and quilt patterns are documented during QUILT DAYS when quilt historians, textile specialists, conservators and other HQRP volunteers record the history of the quilts and their makers.

Owners are encouraged to provide any documented information about the quilt and/or the quilt maker -- letters, news articles, genealogy, photographs, diaries, etc. -- to assist in providing a complete record for the quilt and its maker.

Photographs are taken of the quilts by a professional photographer for archival records. No other photography of the quilt is allowed. Owners may purchase photos of their quilts.

A copy of the complete registration form is given to the owner. The original form is retained for archival records and is used for research purposes only.

The quilt owner's name is not release without written permission. Quilts are not appraised or certified as to age. There is no charge for documenting a quilt or pattern.

If you would like to have your Hawaiian quilt and/or quilt patterns documented by the Hawaiian Quilt Research Project, please contact Lee S. Wild at ------

The Hawaiian Quilt Research Project is a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization and donations to the HQRP are tax-deductible minus the value of goods or services provided.
