Canada Packers Competition Quilts

In 1976, Canada Packers used a travelling collection of quilts as a goodwill gesture to the agricultural community by recognizing quilting as a traditional and continuing craft.

Canada Packers was the largest producer of food products in Canada and operated processing and manufacturing facilities in Great Britain. In 1976 they used a travelling collection of quilts as a goodwill gesture to the agricultural community by recognizing quilting as a traditional and continuing craft.

Mrs. Hattie Lawton of RR 2 St. Thomas received a cheque for $600 last week at the annual convention of the Ontario Association of Agricultural Societies in Toronto. The money came from Canada Packers Ltd.'s Murray Stewart as her prize money for entering the best quilt in the company's annual competition. There were entries from many of the socieities across Ontario. Mrs. Lawton's entry represented the best from the Lambton, Middlesex and Elgin counties area.

Grace Drummond of Moncton, formerly of Downie Township, is the winner of the Agriculture Societies of Ontarion quilt competition. Her winning entry shown here was chosen from about 6,000 quilts. She received 96 points out of 100 in winning the contest. At right is Murray Stewart of Canada Packers.
