Mary Bailey worked for Phoebe Eugenia Shellhammer Meacham

Michigan; United States

Mary Bailey was employed by Phoebe Eugenia Shellhammer Meacham at the time this Ocean Waves top was pieced. In an interview, Grace Field (the quilt's owner and niced of Meacham) said,

This quilt was quilted by a professional quilter at the top of Ward Hill. She quilted for hire, let's put it that way: I wouldn't say she was any more than an ordinary farm woman. But she quilted for hire.

Known only as "A. Ward," this woman was also known as a coverlet weaver.

This pieced quilt comprises blocks set in diamonds, and each of the white squares is quilted with wreath and heart designs.
