Claire and her son, John, shared a love of history. Patriotism runs deep in the Vlasin family. Claire made many quilts to celebrate her country and gifted many of them to her son John.
John remembers his mother's quilting activities this way:
While not a teacher, Mom was a substitute home ec teacher when my younger sister was in middle school in the late 70’s. Mom had sewn clothes, made hats, belts, blankets, for a long time. She signed up for her first quilt class in 1980 or so, with my younger sister as a Mother/daughter activity. Marie, as a middle school student without sewing experience and with many other interest, did not care for the class, but Mom made 2 quilts in short order because Dad remembers boxing them for a move to another house. And the rest is history: she started with smaller projects, including the quilting, and found that she enjoyed finding the designs and choosing the fabrics as her favorite part of quilting. Every vacation, she had blocks to work on by hand, in remote places, without sewing machines. She was always working on things besides quilts themselves: bags, napkins, placemats, pillowcases, sleeping bags, yo yo’s, doll’s clothes, bed shawls, vests, and ties. But she loved considering the patterns, the materials, and she loved her friends in the quilting circle.
