Red, Hot, and Quilted exhibit

The Caprock Art Quilters made the pieces in this exhibit. In evaluating their work they discovered that most worked better with a challenge and so decided to do a red challenge with the pieces intended to accompany the exhibits at the Museum on the theme of Red. Hailing from West Texas and Eastern New Mexico, the Caprock Art Quilters meet quarterly near Lubbock to inspire, encourage and challenge each other in the realm of art quilts. Seldom do museums have artists that create works specifically to support other exhibitions at the museum. The gems in this exhibit illustrate the wide variety of styles of these fiber artists and the vibrant art quilt movement in this part of the country.

Both of our grandfathers, Jarrette L. Hefner and Walter Karl Grubb, served in World War I. In honor of their service, and in memory of the 8.5 million people who died in that war, I have made this quilt. May it be a reminder of the terrible costs of war.

I live among plants as an agriculture-based woman. Red has always been my favorite color. Thus, the combined result is "Lady in Red", representing the West Texas sky, the multiple petal flowers that bloom in West Texas, and a passion for finite beauty.

Spotted Garden

Materials: Cotton fabric, rick-rack braid, buttons, floral leaves.
Date made: 2017
Dimensions: 31.5” x 32.5”
"Spotted Garden" began as a different project. The dot fabric for the background overpowered everything I tried. While sorting through some books, I came across a Hawaiian Applique book and found inspiration. The rick-rack flowers came from a class taken years ago.

Materials: Hand-dyed cotton fabric, commercial batik and printed cotton
fabric, repurposed silk clothing fabric, wool batting, cotton and polyester threads

From his favorite perch in a mesquite tree, the vermilion flycatcher surveys his territory. When a tasty insect flies by, he darts out to catch a quick meal on the fly and returns to his vantage point. Vermillion Vision was inspired by a photograph that I took while bird watching at my son’s rural home in West Texas.

Muscle Bellies

Techniques: Fused collage, machine quilted
Materials: Hand-dyed and commercial cotton
Date made: 2018
Dimensions: 37 x 44 inches
I developed this piece during a period of deep preoccupation with the mysterious engine of healing. The title arose when I learned that in order to rehabilitate my feet, their atrophied muscle bellies would first need to plump up. Standing while working on this piece began my recovery.

Materials: Commercial cotton fabric, hand-painted cotton fabric, felted wool, silk, beads, sequins, pearl cotton thread, rick-rack
Date made: August 2018
Dimensions: 30 wide by 36 tall
As I was putting this quilt together, I told my husband that my bunny (by which I meant the whole quilt) needed a name. He promptly said “Jerome” (meaning just the bunny). After I stopped laughing, I couldn’t figure out any reason not to name the quilt Jerome, and “jug” was more alliterative than “pot."

Heartrise on the Llano - February
Quilt designed and made by Ellie Kreneck
Techniques: Parts of my quilt images are drawn on white cotton and then hand painted with fiber reactive dyes using water soluble resists. After steaming the fabric to set the dyes, I then combine the painted image with imagery fashioned by machine piecing purchased cotton fabric. I use paper templates to cut the shapes out of cloth. The painted images are appliqued with blind stitching or fusing. Cotton batting and backing are utilized in the quilt “sandwich”. I machine quilt part of the art work with cotton thread and hand stitch the rest.
Materials: White cotton fabric; commercial fabric; cotton/poly batting; liquid fiber reactive dyes; water soluble resists
Date made: 2018
Dimensions: H. 33 in. x W. 25 in.
Heartrise on the Llano - February is part of a series on the months of the year - and also the food typical of that month. The fish and cool weather vegetables suggest a Lenten meal. The heart shaped cookies as well as the rising heart remind us of Valentine’s Day.

Synapses: Summer Vacation
Quilt Designed and made by Jane West, Machine Quilted by Renee Houser
Techniques: Machine piecing, machine and hand applique, embroidery, and hand-made polymer clay embellishments.
Materials: cotton fabric, wool fabric, various threads, and polymer clay.
Date made: Summer 2018
This quilt was particularly challenging for me because red is my least favorite color. I have very little red in my wardrobe, and even less in my home’s décor. Initially all I could visualize for this challenge was something red and white, but I was afraid that wouldn’t sustain my interest long enough to finish the piece. So… I added one more wrinkle to the challenge: No white in the fabrics!

Louisa L. Smith’s book “Double Vision Quilts” was the initial inspiration for the Quilt’s design. I planned to use black and white fabrics in the background, but the complementary greens just begged for the opportunity. I finally gave in. Once things were rolling, the wool, embroidery, and polymer clay just screamed for a spot in the lineup. And, so I did almost every color in the rainbow, because really… Summer Vacation in my synapses is a mosaic of warm rich colors, on a cool relaxed background of water play, daydreaming, and running barefoot through the grass!
