International Quilts on the Quilt Index: The Beginnings

In 2010, the Quilt Index received a National Leadership Planning Grant from the Institute for Museum and Library Services to begin planning for the internationalization of the Index. This involved creating and disseminating a survey on global quilt collections, creating an international portal on the QI Wiki, forming an international advisory board, and convening virtual workshops to introduce global museums to the Quilt Index, and taking stock of the international quilts already on the QI through various American contributors, most notably the Michigan State University Museum and the National Quilt Museum.

These two contributors’ international quilt records are presented here, listed by the country in which the quilt was made. We have now added our first international contributor’s records to the Index, those of the South Africa Quilt History Project (these records are not reflected in this gallery). The Quilt Index is now poised to add additional quilt records from museums and documentation projects around the world.
