Mary Bywater Cross earned her B.A. at the University of Iowa in elementary education and library science. For the last two decades she has focused on quilts: designing and making woolen quilts, curating numerous quilt exhibitions, consulting, lecturing, and conducting workshops and retreats. She is especially known for her research on quilts of migration. Her work and exhibits have earned national awards and resulted in two books: Treasures in the Trunk: Quilts of the Oregon Trail (1993) and Quilts and Women of the Mormon Migrations: Treasures of Transition (1996).
