The Princess Feather: Exploring a Quilt Design

2007
Gebel, Carol Williams
United States
From Uncoverings 2007, Volume 28 of the Research Papers of the American Quilt Study Group
Carol Williams Gebel holds a BA from the University of California at Santa Barbara in Cultural Anthropology and received her MA in Librarianship from San Jose State University. She works in the Cataloging Department at the Sacramento State University Library, where she has served as curator of a world textiles exhibit. Although she is a quilter, Carol was not raised with quilts. She discovered her passion for antique quilts after receiving two quilts made about 1900 by her father's maternal grandmother. These quilts were the beginning of her antique quilt collection and her fascination with nineteenthcentury quilts. Additional interests include the use of quilts in death rituals and mourning as well as genealogical research into the lives of quiltmakers. Carol has had articles published in North Carolina Humanities, Piece Work, American Quilter, and Quilting Today. She joined the American Quilt Study Group in 1988 and made her first seminar presentation in 1995.

When AQSG added Uncoverings articles to the Quilt Index, they omitted all the illustrations, for lack of permissions. Although the articles found in the QI (1980-2010, 2012-2016) lack illustrations, they link to quilts, essays, special collections, and documentation projects across the Quilt Index, introducing them to a wider audience. The permission issues have since been resolved and in 2024, AQSG completed adding all the Uncoverings volumes from 1980-2023 to the Digital Commons@University of Nebraska-Lincoln. They are completely searchable and include all the illustrations. You can find, Uncoverings 2007, Volume 28, at this link, https://digitalcommons.unl.edu/aqsg-uncoverings/33/.
