Lula Williams was featured at the Smithsonian Festival of American Folklife in Washington, D.C. and the Michigan State University Museum's annual Festival of Michigan Folklife. She was awarded a Michigan Traditional Arts Apprenticeship Award in: 1992 to teach apprentices Kaye F. Robinson and April Johnson; 2001 to teach apprentices Louella Thornton and Bertha Roberts; two more in 2013 and 2014 to teach apprentice Pamela Day. In 1997, Williams was given the Michigan Heritage Award given annually to outstanding tradition bearers who continue with excellence and authenticity their family and community life.

When she was a little girl, Williams occasionally helped her mother and aunts with their quilting by putting colors together and piecing. When her son was 13, he encouraged her to take a six-week course in quilting at his school; she remembered her mother's techniques almost immediately and has been quilting ever since.
