Bureau Opens for Quilts on Wednesday

By Edith B. Crumb

Tomorrow is the big day-the first day for entering quilts for The Detroit News quilt show, to be held Oct. 7, 8, and 9 at Convention Hall. The quilt office at 827 West Lafayette boulevard, will be open at 8:30 sharp Wednesday morning.

Last year the first quilter arrived at 6:30 a.m. and had a long wait before the doors opened, but she was going to make sure that she would be the first to enter a quilt. The first woman you know who enters a quilt has her picture taken for the paper.

Quilts are coming from far and near. Yesterday a letter was received from Mrs. Mary Gasperik 9314 Cottage Grove, Chicago saying she is sending over five finished quilts and two tops and of course, she is coming to the show too. Last year she spent three days with us and brought two of her friends with her.

Mrs. E. F. Heer, 5517 Balfour Road, has sent in a coupon with three finished quilts noted on it. These have been made by members of the Fez Stitch a& Chatter club, of Moslem Temple.

There is still plenty of time to send in your coupon if you haven't already done so, and the quilt office will be open every day except Sunday from 8:30 a. m. to 5 p. m.

In exchange for each entry you will be given a numbered check and each of your quilts or tops will be put in a separate bag and insured against fire and theft.

Everything is being done to take care of all the quilts in the very best way and you may rest assured they will be protected.

Mrs. Wylie Cassen, 1745 Anite avenue, Lochmoor, Mich., has sent in a coupon for a quilt to be entered by her mother who is in California. Last year this quilt was not finished. After it was completed her mother said, I'd like so much to show it at The Detroit News Show so now she will have an opportunity to do so.

Mrs. Cassen says it is the California Poppy and she thinks that it is lovely. Last June her mother enjoyed her 74th birthday and is still strong and active. Her name is Mrs. E. Balfour, 316 South avenue, Los Angeles.

When she was in Detroit she followed her Quilt Club news so we really feel acquainted with Mrs. Balfour and are so happy to have her send in a quilt.

Mrs. Elzie Hodges, 1535 E Grand River avenue, Fowlerville, Mich., says she hopes to be able to get to the Quilt Show this year as it is so inspiring to find there are still lots of women who still consider hand work as time well and profitably spent.

Mrs. A. J. Howell, Bay Port, Mich., has sent in her coupon. She is entering one finished quilt and one top. The finished one she calls her magazine quilt. She was making quilts for her grandchildren and the young grandson wanted a quilt with pictures of boys on it, so she used designs from magazine covers for the blocks. She was in her 70th year when she designed and made it.

The top she just finished is from the Fan pattern. Mrs. Howell lives in a town in which there are about 150 homes and she thought she would like a quilt made from pieces of cloth from her neighbors and associates so she visited them asking for scraps.

Others heard of it and offered and the first thing she knew she had material from so many women that she had their autographs put on the quilt. Now she has a real friendship design.
