Crazy Patchwork

Crazy Patchwork was published by a Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, department store in 1884. The large, unpaginated 9" x 9-3/4" pamphlet contains two pages of instructional text, a page displaying four engravings of completed examples that are described in detail, and six pages of full-size fancy stitches for the seamstress and needleworker to duplicate. Also described are the Tea Box pattern (familiar today as Tumbling Blocks) and Patty Pan (the center portion of a Grandmother's Flower Garden block). The construction method of piecing often referred to as English or paper piecing is described but not named. Log Cabin and State House Steps patterns are also described. The department store was a Philadelphia institution founded in 1862 moving to the 8th and Market location in 1868 where it remained until 2006 when then owner Macy's closed it.

Patten in 1884 is a 34-page booklet, plus cover, featuring "A Descriptive List of Patterns for Embroidery" and describes different types of embroidery (not included here). The "Patchwork" chapter shown here describes crazy patchwork, Log Cabin patchwork, three pieced designs with embroidered embellishments, and finally two pages of embroidery stitches.

Instructions for Patchwork is a small, 6" x 4" unpaginated instructional and pattern pamphlet published by J. F. Ingalls, [Lynn, MA], in 1884. It illustrates examples of point russe stitches, snow flake stitches, a block of crazy patchwork, embroidery of darning stitches, a table scarf, borders for crazy patchwork, a quilt of silk patchwork, a decorated band for fancy work, and patterns for star and block patchwork.

Ornamental Stitches for Embroidery is a small, 4-3/8" x 4-1/4" unpaginated sixteen-page instructional and pattern pamphlet for crazy patchwork. Although the sixteen pages presented here does not identify a source, it was published by T. Edward Parker, Lynn, Massachusetts, in 1885. It was also distributed through numerous venues including Comfort magazine in Augusta, Maine, usually with the same contents and a revised title page. Included are instructions for making crazy patchwork, the outline stitch and the kensington stitch, information on using arrasene and chenille as materials, ribbon embroidery, and the plush or tufted stitch. The final segment discusses how to do kensington painting. There are eight full-page pattern or stitch illustrations and four insert illustrations of materials, patterns and stitching close-ups.

Wrapper for Mountain Mist Quilting Cotton made by Stearns and Foster Company. The front shows a variety of quilt block details. On the back is printed a quilt pattern, instructions and templates. The date on the outside of the wrapper is 1954. The copyright on the inside of the wrapper is 1944. It is 21 1/8" x 31 7/8". Some minor wear at folds. Handwritten on front "#91 Crazy Pieces c 1944".

This 32-page booklet entitled Self-Instruction in Embroidery by Anna Grayson Ford published by The Vickery & Hill Co., of Augusta, Maine is a reprint of one printed in 1900 by C. W. Calkins, Boston, MA. The author’s name is a pseudonym. Although the focus is embroidered fancy work projects, a crazy quilt layout and stitching are included.
